Cailyn Prins

“My name is Cailyn, I graduated from PPLE in 2018 and majored in Law. After finishing the program, I began studying for my Juris Doctor degree at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in September 2018. I currently live in Toronto and am completing the University’s three year Juris Doctor Program. I will graduate in April this year. Aside from school I also work with a Toronto law firm and assist in their wills and estates division in a student capacity. When I am not working or studying I stay active and practice violin.”

Valentin Weber

“Unsurprisingly, I had to write quite a lot of essays and research papers during my time at PPLE. Yet, personally, I realized that this is exactly what I wanted to do for a living: to pursue ideas and do research. To strengthen my research skills, I decided to take extracurricular courses in the psychology department (mostly methodology), in addition to PPLE. But I was also aware that good writing skills are essential to succeed in my chosen career path, which led me to become an editor for the magazine of UvA’s psychology department. Within PPLE, being part of the Academic Committee contributed to my career goal of becoming a researcher as well, as I got to organize and moderate discussions between academics of different disciplines. Combined, the PPLE program and my extracurricular activities helped me to get accepted into my preferred graduate program – a PhD in cognitive science at École Normale Supérieure”

Anne Craanen

Current location: London

My name is Anne Craanen and I am a research analyst at Tech Against Terrorism. My research focuses on Islamist terrorism, far-right terrorism, and gender and extremism as well as open-source intelligence analysis (OSINT). I did my undergraduate degree in PPLE at the UvA and I have an MSc in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism from UCL and an MA in International Conflict Studies from King's College London.

Kristine Fainveica

“I am an international criminal law jurist currently working at the Permanent Mission of Latvia to the United Nations in New York. Prior to PPLE, I finished two years of undergraduate studies in Arts, Culture, and Media at the University of Groningen and actively participated in youth-led civil society leadership organisations, such as the European Youth Parliament.

In my second and third year at PPLE I did an internship at Global Rights Compliance, where I was assigned to the “Accountability for Mass Starvation” project. As a legal intern, I worked on questions related to the socio-political and humanitarian situation in Yemen, Syria, Venezuela and South Sudan. This experience motivated me to pursue a career in humanitarian diplomacy dedicated to conflict prevention and compliance with international law.

In July 2020 I graduated cum laude from my Master’s degree with an Advanced Certificate in International Criminal Law from the University of Amsterdam and Columbia Law School. In the course of my degree, I continued to work on accountability for starvation crimes.

I am looking forward to sharing my experience at the forthcoming panel.”
